How it works

A walkthrough of the day-to-day flow, from your first sign-in to organizing snippets into laundry piles.

1. Sign in

Sign in with your Google, Microsoft, or Apple account — no separate password. The very first person to ever sign in to a Pilcrow instance is automatically made an administrator.

2. Create a snippet

Click the + icon to open the snippet type picker and choose List, Note, Image, or Link. New snippets land in your feed and in your default laundry pile (the one that always shows everything).

3. Work a list

Click an item's status box to cycle it through unstarted → in progress → complete. Ctrl+click a box to mark an item cancelled instead — it strikes through. Click any item's text to rename it in place, and use the blank row that's always at the bottom of a list to add the next item. Right-click an item to move it to a different list, or to link it to any other snippet.

4. Shape the feed

Drag a snippet by its header to move it. Drag its bottom edge to resize it. Use the column control in the header bar to make the feed's columns wider or narrower — the column count also adjusts on its own as you resize the window. Collapse a snippet down to just its name (optionally showing its creation date and tags) when you don't need the full view.

5. Tag and chain

Open the tag editor on a snippet to attach hashtags and assign each one a color — tags show up right in the snippet's header. Right-click a snippet and choose 'Chain to…' to attach it underneath a master snippet; it'll indent and narrow to show it belongs there.

6. Build a laundry pile

Create a new laundry pile from the sidebar, then right-click any snippet in the main feed and send it to that pile. The snippet stays right where it was in the main feed — the pile is just another view onto it, with its own layout that won't affect any other pile it's in. Every pile has a master list that rolls up the items from every list snippet inside it, with its own show/hide toggle for completed and cancelled items.

7. Filter and search

Use the date picker in the header to jump to everything created on a specific day, click a tag chip to filter to just that tag, or use search to find a snippet by its content.

8. Go premium (optional)

Upgrade to unlock light-up dates, laundry pile webhooks, the MCP server, and PDF export for laundry piles. An administrator can manage tiers and assign them to accounts from the admin page.
